Three Driver Assessment days are over – and the top 40 drivers from 2018 F1 Esports qualifying are now waiting to find our their fate at the inaugural F1 Esports Series Pro Draft on Monday 9 July. The drivers were put through their paces through a variety of physical and mental challenges at Silverstone over the last three days under the watchful eyes of scouts and assessment teams from the nine official F1 Esports teams.
On Monday, the teams will make their choices from the pool of drivers at a star-studded creaming at the Gfinity Arena in London, where Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly will be in attendance. Then its all systems go into the 2018 F1 Esports Pro Series for the rest of the year.
Wednesday’s opening day of assessments was all about the SIM racing. Finland’s Joni Tormala finished on top after dominant displays in the heats, semi-final and final. Cem Bolukbasi and Tini Nakkarinen rounded off the overall SIM racing podium to put themselves in a strong position heading into their second day in front of the judges. The first day ended with an F1-related quiz, which saw the 40 drivers split into teams. On Thursday, after a morning spent walking the Silverstone track, the focus shifted to the physical aspect of eSports racing. The drivers were assessed over a number of tasks, including a driver reaction wall, a team pit stop challenge and a more general fitness assessment.
Bolukbasi again starred here, forming part of the winning pit stop team alongside Jan Fehler and Floris Wijers, while also claiming a top ten spot on the driver reaction wall. The overall winner on the wall was Sweden’s Kimmy Larsson, whose incredible winning score of 4282 was more than 10% higher than his nearest rival. The final day saw a highly-competitive and highly-entertaining day of karting at the Daytona Karting Centre in nearby Milton Keynes. Tension was palpable as the drivers looked to take advantage of their final chance to impress the judges before Monday’s Pro Draft.
Top of the timesheets was Dominik Hofmann, with a scorching fastest lap of 1:09.757, finishing ahead of Graham Carroll in (P2) and Bolukbasi (P3). Another strong showing from Bolukbasi across yet another discipline means that he will enter the Pro Draft on Monday as the highest overall rated driver. Will he become the first number one pick in the history of the F1 Esports Pro Draft? Watch the action live.
