VELOCIPEDE Posted September 24, 2005 Share Posted September 24, 2005 By paul skingley a few have been asking how do the 1969 mod cars compare to our beloved 1967. 1969mod is a different experience to 67 for me, its more aggressive due to the increased grip, meaning to take advantage of the increased performance you have to brake very late and carry more speed through the turns. The cars are actually SLOWER on the straights than 67. Although we are still tweaking the physics you can expect to find around a 4 second improvement over your 67 lap times at tracks like Zandfort and Watkins Glen, much more at Nurby. Some of this improvement comes from having wider tyres but mostly its the extra grip generated by the down forces from the wings. More down force ( wing angle ) = more grip but also more drag which slows you on the straight. Because there is more drag the effect of the tow ( slipstream ) is greatly increased, and great fun in a race. The wings are fully adjustable front and rear, so your car is completely different to drive depending on your wing setup. This will make some great online action as drivers trade off d/f for more top speed. But in a race situation, the guy with more d/f has distinct advantage providing he can stay in the tow off the guy with less d/f and drag on the straights. Power is slightly increases but not that noticable. the Cosworth had found an extra 50bhp as did Ferrari and Brm by revving the engine higher, but this is offset by the increase in weight. The tyres are wider so this adds to the extra grip, also because your footprint is larger its not so fatal to drop a wheel onto the kerb because you still have some rubber on the tarmac. The car's weight is further rearward than 67, the teams did this by moving oil tanks and coolers etc as far rearward as possible. Add to this those big wide rear tyres and you have a car with lots of rear traction. The rear traction was so good that by the end of the year they decided they did not need 4wd. The wider tyres and sprouting wings mean you have less vision when behind someone, and from the back off the grid its just "wings everywhere" especially with the early season cars, ( I'll post some screens showing what I mean ) Like I said at the top, its not 67 but something different. Those two years saw major advance in aero and by 1969 every team wanted a piece of the action.
